Photos: 2008 Winter Polo Picnic

Alex “TallCans” (aka Joker) organized a huge bike polo (Wikipedia, LA Bike Polo) tourney in the Valley in late December.  It drew top players from all over the country.  Anyway, I’m a million years behind on my photos, and here are my best ones (Flickr set) from that event.  You can also check out a nice video recap of the tourney by Lee.

Players from both sides dab, or put their foot down, in this photo.  If your foot touches the ground in bike polo, you are no longer allowed to play, until you touch the wall with your mallet (tap in), or in some places, ride in a circle (360.)

One standard type of polo bike is a fixie, but with low gearing, which facilitates greater control and quicker acceleration:
