Old skool sheriffs

Below is a photos of LA County Sheriff Pitchess at Mira Loma Jail Facility.  Inmates restored unclaimed stolen or lost bikes, rebuilt them, and various Sheriff’s stations redistributed them to needy kids:

As you might have guessed, that is then, not now.   These days, after a cursory attempt to locate the owner, recovered bikes are sent to an online auction house like PropertyRoom.com, and you can view and buy the bikes online.  Way back, when I was just getting started with this stuff, Dorothy Le, currently at LACBC, and I would go out to PropertyRoom’s facility in Pomona to acquire palettes of eight to ten bikes for a bike rental program at UCLA.
