Old Photos: Bikerowave, Ilia Pankin, et al

By Alex Thompson

While Mihai is posting photo reviews of current events, I thought I’d post some of the old photos I’ve accumulated. So, here’s the first of a series of posts with photos of old skool Bikerowave, Santa Monica Critical Mass, and others:The above is a photo of the first Bikerowave volunteer meeting. This would be early January, shortly after Zack, Yolanda and I rented Bikerowave’s first space at 2811 Pico Blvd.

Ilia Pankin Memorial

This Ghost Bike was placed in honor of Ilia Pankin, cyclist, who was killed at Santa Monica & Wilshire on September 18th, 2006. I took this photo at a memorial ride that over 300 cyclists attended. Laying stark white bikes where cyclists have been slain is custom in the bike community. CICLE founders Liz Elliot and Shay Sanchez made the piece, on which family, friends, and strangers lovingly wrote to Ilia.
This is a photo of the first Storm the Bastille ride, then called “Take Me To Your Leader”, on Feburary 5th 2007. I remember that this was the first time I hear “PC” speak, and I wondered “who is this guy?”, but didn’t meet him for reals until months later.

Finally, a slideshow of some more pics of the Santa Monica Critical Mass 3rd Anniversary ride:
