23% of bike involved collisions were hit & run in 2008

LAPD Sergeant David Krumer and Commander David Doan sorted through massive collision data for 2008, and found that in 2008, 23% of bike involved traffic collisions are Hit & Run – 3% were misdemeanor and 20% were felony.  This was just one statistic of many in a report on bike collisions in LA in 2008.  You can see a preliminary report here – BikeTrafficCollisions2008 – scanned by Enci Box.  Not all data are final – expect a final version within a few weeks.  This is a huge step forward for cyclists to have this data – many thanks to Cmd Doan and Sgt Krumer.

  1. Great work Enci and Alex. That stat should raise eyebrows.

  2. I’m glad to have the document, but I find it somewhat confusing when trying to determine who did what action. For example, “red light violations” account for a significant percentage of crashes, but did the driver or the cyclist run the light?

  3. Just for clarity – LAPD put together this report . . . and I’m just releasing what they gave to us in the Cyclist LAPD Task Force meeting.
